"You're extraordinary in every way." American Cinematheque honours George Clooney
These words from no other than Julia Roberts just before presenting one of the biggest stars of the new Millennium with his award. For George Clooney the awards just keep on coming, in a year where he's already received an Oscar and a Golden Globe, the actor has just collected another trophy: the 2006 American Cinematheque Award. The Gala Event at he Beverly Hilton Hotel was packed with friends and fans who celebrated the star's multifaceted career:
Julia Roberts, Bonnie Hunt, Ellen Barkin, Morgan Freeman, Salma Hayek, Julianna Margulies, Don Cheadle and Noah Wyle took turns praising and teasing Clooney before presenting video montages featuring highlights from his career. Out-of-town well-wishers Matt Damon, John Cusack, David Letterman, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Drew Barrymore, Renee Zellweger, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and former president Bill Clinton sent their kudos via taped messages.
Salma Hayek offered a bit of advice during her part of the presentation: "To all the girls in the world who are in love with George, I say, 'Give it up, sisters. He's the best of friends, but I think he'll make a lousy boyfriend.'
"Before I met my husband, you were just about the best man I thought I ever knew," said Julia Roberts
Clooney was the 21st recipient of the American Cinematheque Award. Previous winners include Al Pacino, Nicole Kidman and Denzel Washington. The ceremony was a fundraiser for the Cinematheque's film and video programs at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood and the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica.
