Her next box office success was the thriller Sleeping with the Enemy, a deeply dramatic role where she played a battered wife who escapes her demented husband.
Her film career took a more light-hearted turn for the role of Tinkerbell in Steven Spielberg's Hook. She took a break and returned a few years later in The Pelican Brief, co-starring Denzel Washington. Several movie failures followed, but 1997's My Best Friend's Wedding turned it around as did 1999's Runaway Bride, reuniting much of the Pretty Woman cast.
