Discovered: Inspired by her brother's ska records, Gwen joined her brother and his friends in forming the band No Doubt. Gwen shared vocals with friend, John Spence, until he committed suicide in December, 1987. The band was deeply shaken by the tragedy but continued to play at parties and small venues until they were signed to Interscope in 1991.
Resume: No Doubt's debut album in 1992 went unnoticed, and it wasn't until there was more turmoil in the band that better circumstances arose for Gwen. After her brother left to be an animator on The Simpsons and Gwen broke up with band mate Tony Kanel, she wrote several songs to reflect that time, which went into their third album, Tragic Kingdom.
The album was an undeniable hit, with singles like "Just a Girl," "Spiderwebs," and "Don't Speak". While the band released two other hit albums, Return to Saturn and Rock Steady, Gwen was getting all the attention, including being voted one of People magazine's "50 Most Beautiful People". She started to venture outside of the band, collaborating with other artists like Eve, and Moby.
After taking a break from No Doubt, Gwen had the idea to create a solo pop and dance inspired album, and her first single was just that. "What You Waiting For?" was an instant favourite, as was her album, Love,Angel,Music,Baby. Other hit singles followed, including the recent "Rich Girl," and "Hollaback Girl'.
Leaving her successful music career aside for a moment, Gwen took the role of Jean Harlow in the award-winning film, The Aviator. She proved she could act as well as she could sing. And she wasn't about to stop there. Gwen created her own fashion line, L.A.M.B., which features her unique punk-rock meets glam take on fashion.
