Christina Aguilera has been an iconic pop singer ever since her first single 'Genie in a Bottle' which brought the stunning blonde into the public eye back in 1999. At that time, a playful relationship was established between Aguilera and fellow pop sensation Britney Spears as the two battled for the top of the charts and were rumoured to be embroiled in intense catfights whenever they crossed paths.

Over a decade later, each musician has matured and followed different paths, both artistically and personally, and it is now very difficult to draw comparisons between Spears' electronic pop and Aguilera's emotional soul music, but it looks as if things are about to change.

This summer, Aguilera's fourth English language studio album, Bionic, is set to take the chance by storm and has been described by the singer herself as being "completely different" from any of her past work. Known for incorporating aspects of her own life in her music, including harrowing moments of self loathing and reflections on child abuse, Aguilera has stated that the birth of her son and her evolution into a mother will play a strong role in the theme of the record and allow fans to see the singer in a whole new light.

Story continues below

Aguilera is collaborating with myriad talented artists this time around, including Australian pop singer Sia Furler, who has co-written and produced four of the songs on the new record. Alongside Sia, artists such as Goldfrapp, Ladytron and Le Tigre are lending a helping hand - giving further fuel to the fire that Aguilera has lit in the past as an example of a musician who works hard to include feminist values and concepts in her music.

Although no songs have been heard yet from the new album, fans are waiting with bated breath to hear for the first time Aguilera's latest reinvention of herself. And in spite of many people in the know all agreeing that the album couldn't be more different from the singer's previous styles, Aguilera's past ventures in the recording industry have prepared her fans well for what's to come: each of her previous albums has been exceptionally different from the last and it's likely that fans will expect no different from the next.

Bionic is due to hit the shops and the internet at the end of summer 2010 and can be picked up on CD or, for fans who can't wait to hear the next evolution of the artist, through mp3 downloads on the day of release.
